Summary: the USB backend "improvements" have rendered my printer useless with CUPS. Same printer works fine when printing through Windows in Virtualbox with USB passthrough.
Now it fails every single job, printing half a page and then ejecting the page when a USB reset is issued. My Canon i560 was working fine until the update two days ago.
